Understanding How Regenerative Medicine Works

Understanding How Regenerative Medicine Works

Medical science has long understood that your body works constantly to regenerate itself at the cellular level. Some cells last longer than others. New skin cells replace old about every seven days. Red blood cells last about four months, and a bone regenerates all its cells over 10 years.

When you experience an injury or develop an infection or disease, your body also has a built-in overdrive system that works to speed up this cell-replacing action and heal the damage. Regenerative medicine provides stem cell injections and other therapies that support and enhance this natural process.

Our team at Apple Medical Centers in Chattanooga, Tennessee, often recommends regenerative medicine treatments for chronic joint pain caused by arthritis and other medical conditions. Our pain-relief specialists are impressed with the overall results of this therapy and love the positive impact it has on our patients’ overall mobility and well-being.

What is regenerative medicine?

Much of medicine is designed to help your body heal as fully as possible from injury or illness. Antibiotics are prescribed to destroy infection-causing bacteria. Surgeons place sutures or skin grafts to assist in wound closure. Damaged joints are replaced with manufactured devices to restore mobility and eliminate pain.

Regenerative medicine seeks to aid your body’s healing through natural processes, such as stem cell therapy. For instance, rather than repairing worn cartilage in your joints with donor tissue placed during knee surgery, regenerative medicine therapies can enhance your body’s ability to grow its own healthy cartilage via an injection.

It’s not advanced to the point that we can call it a stand-alone treatment for joint issues such as arthritis. But when combined with physical therapy and other conservative measures offered at Apple Medical Centers, regenerative medicine can help restore your joint mobility, decrease or eliminate your pain, and help you avoid surgery.

How do stem cells fit with regenerative medicine?

Stem cells can trigger tissue repair and rebuilding throughout your body. As the basic building blocks of your cells, they facilitate the healing process by differentiating into specialized cells that eventually regrow damaged tissue structures, such as worn or damaged tissue in an arthritic joint.

This process also stimulates the release of healing growth factors and other natural substances that decrease inflammation in the targeted treatment area, which also decreases your pain.

Where do the stem cells come from?

At Apple Medical Centers, we provide injections with amniotic allograft serum that contains stem cells and other powerful growth factors. This material is obtained from the donated umbilical cord tissue of healthy live births.

Mothers consent to the donation and undergo careful health screening before being accepted into the program. The cord material is collected immediately following a healthy birth and transported to a lab that then prepares the amniotic allograft serum under FDA safety guidelines and quality standards.

If you’re struggling with chronic pain and are considering surgery for worn or damaged joints, make an appointment at Apple Medical Centers. Regenerative therapy may be a better solution. Call our office or use the online form to schedule a consultation.
